To accommodate different travel needs, Indonesia offers several visa options to foreigners who wish to enter its territory. One of them is the visa on arrival (VOA) which certain travelers can apply for directly at the border, or through this website (eVOA).
The visa on arrival (also knows as B213) is not available to everyone and may not be the best way to obtain an Indonesian visit visa. Most eligible travelers choose to obtain their visa through the online Indonesia visa service instead.
Foreign citizens are invited to check the information below before traveling to decide whether the VOA is suitable for them.

The visa on arrival allows its holder to remain in Indonesia for up to 30 days. However, it is possible to renew it.
To extend a VOA, travelers must visit an Indonesian immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi in Indonesian.) It is possible that applicants may return to the office up to 3 times before the process is complete.
The requirements for the visa on arrival extension are:
- 2 completed extension forms (the Formulir untuk perpanjangan pertama visa kunjungan form and the Formulir perubahan data orang asing form)
- Eligible passport that is valid for at least 6 months
- Copy of a sponsor’s identity card (agencies can act as sponsor for a fee)
- Payment of the extension fee
Travelers are advised to apply at least 10 days before their visa is due to expire.
Overstaying an Indonesian VOA will result in a fee (IDR300,000 per day) and may affect future visa applications.
Can I apply for another Indonesian visa if I arrived with a VOA?
If you apply for a visa when you arrive in Indonesia, you can only renew the same visa. To enter with another visa type you must leave and return with a new travel permit obtained from outside the country.
Differences betwen Indonesian Visa on Arrival, Traditional Visa, and Electronic Visa
Although visas on arrival do not require the traveler to apply in advance, they are considered inconvenient by many visitors.
Applicants must prepare all documents in advance and travel with them. They also have to enter Indonesia through designated border crossing points and must wait in long lines at the airport.
Traditional paper visas are granted prior to departure but require the applicant to visit an Indonesian embassy or consulate in person (often several times) and present longer processing times.
That is why many tourists prefer to apply for an electronic visa on arrival. These visas can be obtained entirely online meaning that there is no need to visit an embassy or immigration officer.
The online visa application only takes minutes to complete and will save time at the airport. The visa is processed in 1 business days but in some cases it may take longer, up to 2 days.
The table below outlines the key differences between the eVOA and the VOA:
eVOA | VOA | |
Length of stay | 30 days | 30 days |
Number of entries | Single entry | Single entry |
Extension | 30 additional days | 30 additional days |
Application | 100% online | In person |
Payment | Online payment | Cash |
