Do Americans need a visa to transit in Indonesia?
US passport holders do not need an Indonesia's trantit visa if they will remain in the international transit area of Soekarno-Hata Airport for less than 24 hours, of other Indonesian international airports for less than 8 hours.
You need a visa to go through immigration, for example, to change airports or terminals, even if the total transit time is under 24 hours. US passport holders who have a layover in Indonesia and wish to leave the airport can apply for the e-VOA.
